Supporters of a plan to raise money for a statue of Bon Scott in his hometown of Kirriemuir, Scotland received a big boost recently when AC/DC put their weight into the project with a post on their official website. The campaign is looking to raise over $75,000 (50,000 pounds) before June 5. As of today (May 16), they’re one-third of the way there.

Sculptor John McKenna will design the monument. The effort, according to NME, is being organized by DD8 Music, who’s behind the Bon Scott music festival in Kirriemuir. DD8′s Graham Calloway said he didn’t speak with anyone from the band before they put the fundraiser up on their website.

But now that’s changed. “The AC/DC community is being invited to help fund the statue project!” the band’s note reads, before pointing readers to the DD8′s Facebook page.

In the past individual members have shown support for the tribute. Former bassist Mark Evans told Ultimate Classic Rock in Sept. 2012 that it’s an honor for Scott, AC/DC’s original frontman, who died at age 33 in 1980.

“It’s so amazing that Bon is getting honored like this,” he said. “Especially since Scotland is such an important place in the history of AC/DC. Bon already had a street named after him in Kirriemuir and now this! I look forward to visiting Bon’s birthplace in the future, hopefully for Bon Fest 2013!”

The statue would be the second of Scott, who moved to Austrailia as a young boy. There is one (pictured above) at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbor in Claremont, Aus. that was erected in 2008.
