On this day in rock history, Grateful Dead legend Jerry Garcia died, seemingly bringing the band's long, strange trip to a very sad close. The Dead would remain largely dormant, in fact, for decades – until holding a series of farewell reunion concerts earlier this year.

The Beatles, meanwhile, became part of a grisly storyline involving Charles Manson and a string of murders. Pink Floyd released More, a transitional soundtrack album between the departure of Syd Barrett and their career-making release, The Dark Side of the Moon.

Kiss took the first steps toward an unlikely reunion of their original four members, and Tommy Lee stepped out from behind the kit with a newly reunited Motley Crue to release his second solo album.
