Carl Coffey

Paper or plastic? Other than bagging groceries at the A&P in town or milking cows on Daddy and Mother’s dairy farm, I’ve only ever worked “on-air” in radio. After high school, I read the obituary report on the Lapeer radio station (yep, same frequency) and was a Mortarman in the 4rth Infantry Division in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Bringing free-form radio back to Detroit in creating and hosting "The Rif Rock Café” and being “Your Afternoon Coffey Break” were high-points of my radio career in the Motor City. I’m glad for the opportunity to entertain and inform listeners every morning on US 103.1, to promote the neighborhood and to be part of the community I grew up in.

I interviewed Sergeant Barb Soffin of the Michigan State Police Lapeer Post on my morning show the other day. She talked about The Big Red Barrel Project and the fact that heroin addition typically starts with the abuse of prescription medication, specifically heavy painkillers. A child hears about kids taking Vicodin and Oxycontin and finds some of these medications in the home medicine cabinet and decides to try them out.

Like they say at the National Kite Month website this is the perfect time to promote the wonderful qualities that kite flying has to offer people of all ages & physical ability levels. Kiting is truly a universal activity, limited only by the imagination.

Jim O’Dell, the Lake Orion man who found Gemma, the black retriever with an arrow in her head, thinking it might be a prank, says “My first thought was, is this a joke?” He called Lapeer County Animal Control, sat down a few feet away from Gemma and petted her after she walked over to him and put her head down.
