It was on this date in 1941 General Mills in Minneapolis created a new dry breakfast cereal called Cheerie Oats. The name was later shortened to Cheerios.

Did you know that in 1937 General Mills engineer, Thomas R. James, creates the puffing gun, which inflates or distorts cereal pieces into puffed up shapes. This new technology was used  to create Kix cereal and in 1941 to create Cheerios.
