Bob Seger is one of 12 performing songwriters nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame class of 2012, which will be inducted on June 14 in New York City.

Seger’s competition includes Elvis Costello, Dion DiMucci, Blondie’s Deborah Harry and Chris Stein, Yusuf Islam (aka Cat Stevens), Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart of Eurythmics, Gordon Lightfoot, George Michael, Steve Miller, Lou Reed, the Who’s Pete Townshend and Tom Waits. The nominees will be voted on by their peers.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame “celebrates songwriters (and) educates the public with regard to their achievement.” Previous inductees include Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Elton John, Billy Joel, and the Motown team of Eddie Holland, Lamont Dozier and Brian Holland.

Seger is currently in rehearsals for a U.S. tour that starts Nov. 2 at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center in Ypsilanti and runs through Dec. 30 in Las Vegas. He recently released a rendition of Little Richard’s “Hey Hey Going Back to Birmingham,” which will be part of the two-disc cd  “Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets"  due in November.
