Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart in 1968 – The Vault

British blues rockers the Jeff Beck Group got going in 1968 with the remarkable debut Truth.  Included in the cast were future superstars Rod Stewart (vocals), Ron Wood (bass and guitars) and Aynsley Dunbar (drums).  THAT is why the album still holds up today and is a perfect time capsule for th

Classic 1971 Lennon – Today’s Vinyl Vault

John Lennon's mean spirited 1971 attack on his old buddy Paul McCartney has become legendary among fans.  How Do You Sleep? says a lot about Lennon's pent up hostility he held at the time, thankfully, feelings that mellowed over time.  It is a brief peak into the past of two worldly loved celeb

Taking it Slow, Easy and Loud – Today’s Vinyl Vault

David Coverdale's notorious Led Zeppelin inspirations were never more prominent than on today's Vault track.  If Plant sang it, it would BE Led Zeppelin.  Well, seemingly anyway.  Maybe it did go over the line but it's still great, it's still Coverdale and it's pure Whitesnake at their Zeppis

Rarely Heard Doors – Today’s Vinyl Vault

Light My Fire from the Doors first album got so much attention (and still does today) that the other tracks from the set seem forgotten.  Enter: the Vinyl Vault!  I love getting into the deeper things like The Crystal Ship, a love song said Morrison, who was reportedly inspired for the title by an oil rig just off the coast that lo

Pat Benatar Raises Hell – Today’s Vinyl Vault

Not that child abuse was anything new in 1980, it's just that Pat Benatar brought the problem up front and center with her big radio hit that year, Hell Is For Children.  A cleverly written lyric with the music building in both volume and intensity, it became huge at rock radio and a requirement at any

An Early Pink Floyd Gem – Today’s Vinyl Vault

"One Of These Days I'm Going To Cut You Into Little Pieces."  I'm guessing, especially in 1971, that was a bit violent for a lot of folks so the title was shortened to just One Of These Days, and Nick Mason's vocal debut later in the song was so processed it's barely intelligible.  Pretty safe.  A great example of a young Pink Floyd sharpening their teeth.  Out of town?  Listen live on-line around 5:20pm.

Jo Jo Gunne? Will Explain on Today’s Vault

Born from the ashes of Spirit, Jo Jo Gunne was formed in the early 1970's by Jay Ferguson, who many classic rockers may remember from his two solo singles later on, Thunder Island and Shakedown Cruise.  The Gunne had an early Eagles type of sound that rewarded them with one hit, out of four albums.  Run Run Run went away as fast as it came in so you'll have to let me know if you remember it.

Rarely Heard Guess Who – Today’s Vinyl Vault

The Share The Land album by The Guess Who fared much better than fans thought, being the first album without Randy Bachman.  His tenure was over right after American Woman was released, and was a massive hit.  Could they repeat this success?  Yep, and then some.  You couldn't go anywhere during the early 1970's with

Got Some Time? Iron Butterfly On Today’s Vault

San Diego band Iron Butterfly had their 15 minutes of fame (OK, 17 minutes) in 1968 when the title of their second album went through the roof.  In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was a drunken slur mishearing of "In The Garden Of Eden", after which, the boys got such a kick out of, the slur stuck.  This story has many versions but would you trust these guy

Fever Tree Remembered – Today’s Psychedelic Vault

Our psychedelic track today visits the girls of San Francisco, via an old Texas band, Fever Tree.  Texas?  Well, psychedelia was everywhere friends.  This inventive band, perhaps way ahead of their time, never really got the due the

Hippy Dippy Animals Groove On Today’s Vault

As Eric Burden puts it, fly "trans-love" airlines into San Francisco to better understand this song.  It will be worth it.  It's the American dream, includes Indians too.  Wow!  That late 60's verbiage sounds hippy dippy

Bubble Puppy? I’ll Explain On Today’s Vinyl Vault!

Psychedelic week continues today with a little known band from Texas, Bubble Puppy.  An interesting one hit wonder that may have been more into hard rock than psychedelia, mixing the two quite well on their hit Hot Smoke And Sa
