"Wild Lapeer" returns on Saturday, May 5 to the Chatfield School Campus and  adjacent Prairies and Ponds of Oakdale. Starting  at 11 a.m. and going until 4 p.m. The event is free, and there’s something for everyone in the family. Join the celebration of “all things outdoors.”

Wild Lapeer Program:

Falconry. Craig Perdue of Shadow Speak, will present in depth perspective on hunting with birds of prey including avian psychology   This program will include live birds and the opportunity to see them fly.

Participate in all the steps of processing Native Wild Rice including parching over an open fire, dancing or jigging to remove the hull, winnowing the chaff, and cleaning.

Bats of the World. The Organization for Bat Conservation from Cranbrook Science Center presents an amazing program featuring live bats. Learn the truth about bats and how they live in this exciting multi-media presentation.

Canoe Rides. Lapeer Rotary Club and Chatfield School will have canoes for people to use for a brief exploration of the Oakdale Pond.

Build A Bluebird House.  Materials, instructions, and assistance will be available so participants can build their own bluebird house to take home.  Four other native cavity nesting birds will also use this house.

Great Lakes Geology. The Flint Rock and Gem Club will feature an interactive display of Michigan rocks, minerals and fossils.

Natural Building. 2 hours of hands-on earthen plastering on a Mississipian Era Native structure.

Oakdale Cemetary Nature Hike. Explore the fascinating history of Oakdale and hike out to the beautiful 100 yr old cemetery with guides Karen and Sarah Page.

Pioneer Farm Tools. The Lapeer Historical Society hosts an interactive exhibit to experience local farm history and agricultural innovation.

Alpacas. Join Debbie Vervike of Funny Face Alpaca farm to learn everything you ever wanted to know about this incredible animal.

Plant A Flower. Join the Lapeer County Master Gardeners and Campbell’s Greenhouse for a chance to take home a potted flower.

Waterlife. Participants will use dipnets and field-scopes with naturalist in a close up adventure observing the aquatic animals that live at Ponds and Prairies.

Giant John Deere Tractor. Join the Lapeer County Farm Bureau for a chance to sit in the driver’s seat of a real huge tractor. Bring along your camera for this exciting photo opportunity.

Super Hero Training Academy Storytelling Performance.  The Superhero Training Academy will engage the audience in a storytelling extravaganza of the "Hero's Journey".

Fly Fishing. Join us for a demonstration of tying flies and take one home and learn to cast on nearby Farmers Creek.

Disc Golf. All ages welcome to try our 6 hole disc golf course.
