Who would do this? In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, a 28-year-old Goodland Township man drove his dog to a secluded location in the North Branch area and shot her in the head with a crossbow. Gemma, a two-year old black retriever, wandered for two days with an arrow lodged above her left eye before being found by a construction worker last Monday afternoon. The arrow narrowly missed her brain and optic nerve. “It’s a miracle” said Lapeer County Animal Control Chief, Aimee Orn. “It missed everything important by millimeters.” The arrow removed, Gemma is recovering and will be put up for adoption if the owner relinquishes ownership. “If he signs off, it will be a fairly quick process and we will be able to find her a home immediately” said Orn. “If not it can take anywhere between one to two months while the case in court.” Hopefully, felony animal cruelty charges are being sought against the owner.
