driverless car

Self driving cars aren't just for the futuristic movie family the Jetsons any more. They are a reality, and they will be legal to drive soon in California.

The new law, which goes into effect next year in California, establishes safety and performance regulations for the testing of driverless cars, as long as there is a driver able to take control if necessary. "We're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality." said California governor Jerry Brown just before he signed the bill.

Google has been working on a fleet of driverless cars since 2010. These cars rely on video cameras, lasers, radar sensors and a database of information that has been collected from manually driven cars to help with navigation. These automated cars could be an everyday reality within a decade.

Car companies working on the technology necessary for driverless cars include BMW, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota, Volvo, Hyundai and Volkswagon.

Can you imagine life with driverless cars? Very cool or very strange?
