Watch the Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus Cover The Beatles’ ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’

‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ is a rock ‘n’ roll classic, one whose legacy has endured and flourished over the decades no matter how many times less talented acts have covered it — which is our way of saying that there is now a full-length version of the Flaming Lips and Miley Cyrus‘ version of ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds,’ and things will eventually be fine. We will all get through this together.

But in the meantime, well, here’s some footage of Cyrus performing the song with Lips frontman Wayne Coyne and drummer Steven Drozd. According to Pitchfork, the performance — which took place at the Phones4u Arena in Manchester, U.K. — was being taped for possible inclusion in the Billboard Music Awards telecast scheduled for May 18. As you can see in the fan-shot footage embedded here, Cyrus tells the audience that they might need to take a few passes at the song, and after this performance, they start getting ready to do it again.

It’s all part of the run-up to the Lips’ next release, a ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ tribute record titled ‘With A Little Help From My Fwends.’ According to the label’s press release, “The band has recorded their own versions of each track on The Beatles’ 1967 classic in their own inimitable style, with help from special friends Miley Cyrus, Moby, Electric Wurms (A LIPS side project) and many others.” Pre-orders for the album begin May 18, with a release currently scheduled for Oct. 28. The band will donate some of the proceeds from the album to the Bella Foundation, which helps low-income, elderly or terminally ill pet owners in their native Oklahoma City with the cost of veterinarian’s bills.
