Mark Fredrick Farner was born in Flint on September 29,1948. His first musical instrument was the tuba he played in high school and he would trade in the horn for the guitar. With help and inspiration from his mother Mark set his sights on becoming a musician.
After being a part of a few area bands he teamed up with Don Brewer and Mel Schacher to form Grand Funk Railroad. Backed up by the managerial skills of Lapeer's Terry Kanpp-Knight the band became one of the most successful bands of the time.
In 1971, Grand Funk Railroad sold out New York's Shea Stadium in 72 hours. Mark and the boys from Flint were happening big time.
