t. Gun violence has become so bad in Genesee County that the county is about to start outfitting the dogcatchers with bulletproof vests. The county Board of Commissioners agreed last week to spend almost $3,000 on five bulletproof vests in response to the violence that produced a record number of homicides in Flint in 2010.

The county has five officers who respond to complaints about dogs running loose or dangerous dogs. Commissioners approved the purchase with a unanimous vote. Only in Flint does a dogcatcher need a bulletproof vest.
