He will be remembered as the longest-serving reporter on the CBS news program '60 Minutes', where he reported for almost five decades. He began on the program in 1970, and according to The New York Times, CBS had just announced his retirement on May 11 of this year. The twelve time Emmy winner had broadcast over 900 reports for the show, and before joining '60 Minutes', he was well known as one of the most powerful broadcast journalists in the Vietnam era.

CBS broadcast a special about Safer called 'Morley Safer: A Reporters Life' on May 15, just four days before his death.

Safer is survived by his wife Jane, his daughter Sarah (and her husband Alexander Bakal), a brother, a sister and three grandchildren.
