Levon Helm Memorial To Take Place April 26

In the last decade of his life, Levon Helm opened up his home in Woodstock, N.Y. for his Midnight Ramble concerts. Therefore, it’s fitting that it will be the site of a memorial for him. Rolling Stone is reporting that the service will take place on April 26 from 10AM to 3PM. Helm passed away on April 19 at the age of 71 after a lengthy bout with throat cancer. Friends and fans are invited to attend.

Helm was the drummer of the Band and sang lead on many of their best-known songs, including ‘The Weight,’ ‘The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down’ and ‘Ophelia.’ Helm was originally from Turkey Scratch, Ark. but made Woodstock his home in the mid-1960s when the group was working with Bob Dylan.

Steven Davis, with whom Helm wrote his biography, ‘This Wheel’s on Fire: Levon Helm and the Story of the Band,’ told the Boston Globe that there will be a New Orleans-style brass band procession through the streets of Woodstock. However, Helm’s manager, Barbara O’Brien, on her Facebook page, has said that there is no official word about that.

However, O’Brien did say that Helm will be buried in the Woodstock Cemetery in the grave next to Rick Danko, the Band’s bassist. Danko died in 1999 due to a drug-related heart failure.
