The Gibson J-160E John Lennon is thought to have written and recorded ‘Love Me Do,’ ‘Please, Please Me’ and the LP ‘With The Beatles’ on sold for three times its $800,000 auction estimate on Saturday. John purchased the acoustic guitar in September 1962 at Rushworth’s Music House in Liverpool. He used it for about a year before swapping it with George Harrison in 1963 after which it vanished. The guitar’s whereabouts remained unknown until last year when a California man found an old magazine article about George featuring a photograph of the Gibson. The man bought it in the late sixties for $275. One half of the proceeds will go to John and Yoko’s Spirit Foundation.
