Beginning on September 15th, shoppers in Southeast Michigan will be able to use a smartphone app to order home delivery from Meijer stores.

Before you head to the app store, the service is only available at 25 Detroit-are Meijer locations -- for now. Meijer stores in Oakland County, as far north as Auburn Hills, are participating (see map below), but no plans for expansion into Genesee County have been announced.

The service requires use of the Shipt smartphone app, and a shipt subscription. The cost is $99 per year or $14 monthly. There's no delivery fee on orders over $35, and a $7 deliver fee is tacked on to orders under $35.

Linda Gobler, president and CEO of the Michigan Grocers Association tells the Detroit News that competition from online retailers such as Amazon is prompting brick and mortar companies to become more competitive.

“There’s a lot of competition, (and) you’ve also got an aging population who might not be able to drive. ... A lot of families are two-career families. People are looking for ways to make shopping easier.”
