As speculated the other day, things are about to get a whole lot chillier for Metallica. The band is heading to Antarctica for a concert on the cold continent in December. And here's the best part: They'll be playing without amps!

Earlier this month, drummer Lars Ulrich hinted at a special announcement that would take the band to "another frontier." Today they announced that they will be playing a special concert near the heliport of the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on Dec. 8.

According to a press release on the band's website, the show sounds like an interesting, and challenging, endeavor. "After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth ... except for one," they write.

But here's the, um, cool part: "We'll be playing inside a dome on the base and, in another twist, the show will be transmitted to the audience via headphones with no amplification ... a real first for us!"

The band is holding a contest for fans in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Mexico with Coca-Cola Zero. Lucky Latin-American fans will not only get a chance to see the concert, they also get an Antarctic cruise out of the deal. To rub it all in, the show will be streamed live to those countries.

So, sorry, fans everywhere else in the world -- you can't enter the contest. And you won't be able to see the concert as it goes down. But Metallica promise that the show will air everywhere else at a later date.
