We’ve all been there. While NASA’S Deep Space Climate Observatory satellite was taking photographs of the Earth, the dark side of the moon put itself into the view of EPIC: DISCOVR’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera. The images showing the moon passing over the Pacific Ocean near North America were taken last month from one million miles away. The far lunar side doesn’t have “the large, dark basaltic plains or maria that are so prominent on the Earth-facing side” says NASA. “Our planet is a truly brilliant object in dark space compared to the lunar surface” say project scientist, Adam Szabo. Watch this animation featuring actual satellite images of the far side of the moon illuminated by the sun as it crosses between EPIC and the Earth.
