An estimated 1.34 million Michigan residents will travel 50 miles or more from home during the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday period, up seven percent from last year according to AAA Michigan. They join the 43.6 million Americans who will travel nationally - up almost one percent - according to AAA's survey. The holiday period is defined as Wednesday, November 21 to Sunday, November 25.

AAA Michigan President Steve Wagner said "we continue to see an uptick in the number of Michigan residents who travel. Our residents will be taking to the roads and skies - and they are savvy traveler. They continue to look for ways to economize their travel budgets so they can be with family and friends."

Vehicle travel remains the most popular form of Thanksgiving transportation. Eighty-nine percent of Michigan travelers will head to their destination this way. Only eight percent of Michigan travelers will head by air, while the remaining three percent will go by bus or train.
