Disc Jockey, or DJ for short, according the dictionary is a person who conducts a radio broadcast consisting of recorded music, informal talk, commercial announcements, etc. The first disc jockey was a 16 year old named Ray Newby who in 1909 was a student at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless in California.
Ray was part an experiment and played records over the airwaves for the first time. Live music was what you heard on the radio before Ray started spinning records for the listeners. The Disc Jockey idea caught on and it went nationwide.
According to radio history Walter Winchell (narrator on the old Untouchables TV series) came up the term.
Happy Disc Jockey Day to all my fellow DJs.
