Police have been able to view proof of insurance on a cell phone for a while, and it looks like Michigan may catch up with the times by including car registration as well.

Legislation has been introduced in the Michigan House proposing that drivers would be able to provide their cars registration on their mobile phone.

Drivers have been doing this with their proof of insurance for a while now, and it only makes sense to include the registration.  The bill passed the house unanimously, and looks like it won't have much trouble being signed into law.

This will be a welcome change from having to keep track of a single slip of paper in your car.  Even the tidiest of cars can become disaster areas, especially if you have kids.  I like that this will make things more convenient in case of an accident or a traffic stop.

Some people are worried about privacy, but the law states that police would only be able to view the registration and insurance.  Anything else on the phone is protected by the law.

Do you think there's a real risk of losing privacy with this new law, or is it just a matter of catching up with technology?

This could be the next step to having a mobile drivers license.  There are many more security concerns around that idea, so it will most likely be a while before that could come to be.
