It's a good time to remember an earlier Run For The Roses as the world descends on Churchill Downs today. Ferdinand won the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders’ Cup Classic and the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year. He will forever be remembered not for his wins but how he lost his life. Legislation introduced last week would stop retired thoroughbreds from being sold to ‘kill buyers’ after their careers are over. HR 1942 would prohibit the transport of American horses for human consumption abroad and permanently forbid the reestablishment of slaughterhouses in the US.
