As the names of the five police officers gunned down in Dallas Thursday night are being released, we've learned that one of the officers is former Michigan native Michael Krol.

The Redford native moved to Texas nine years ago, after serving the Wayne County Sheriff's office from 2003 to 2007.

Krol's mother tells 9 News that her son was living the dream as a police officer.

"[He] just turned 40 in April. He knew the danger of the job but he never shied away from his duty as a police officer. He was a great caring person and wanted to help people. A wonderful son, brother, uncle, nephew and friend."

Thursday's attack in Dallas was the deadliest day for United States police officers since the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Our deepest sympathies are with Krol's family, and the families of the others who lost their lives Thursday.
