One of my favorite actors died on this day in 1980.  "The King of Cool" Steve McQueen. Steve was 50 years old when he passed away from mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer affecting the membrane lining of the lungs and abdomen.

He came from being a troubled kid who spent time in reform schools to become one of the world's most popular actors. Today Steve McQueen lives on as a icon of pop culture. Very hip and cool.

Steve's first lead role was in 1958 with the low-budget sci-fi film The Blob.

That flick would lead to great film career in movies like The Sand Pebbles, Bullitt, The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Getaway, Papillon, and The Towering Inferno. On television Steve starred in the western Wanted Dead or Alive.

Enjoy some video action with The King of Cool and the movie "Bullitt".
