Rookie Starter Does His Job in Loss

Rookie starter Duane Below pitched five innings and limited the Oakland A’s to three runs in his first career start.  It was the relief help that let the Tigers down.  Relief pitcher David Purcey picked up his second loss for the Tigers.  Oakland’s Hideki Matsui hit his 500th professional homer Wednesday and drove in three runs to lead the Oakland Athletics over the Detroit Tigers 7 - 5.    The Tigers also acquired third baseman Wilson Betemit from Kansas City for two minor league prospects.  Betemit is expected to join the Tigers on Thursday in Minnesota and will replace Brandon Inge as the starting third baseman.  Inge was also optioned to the minors.
