Simpsons character Apu Nahasapeemapetilon has long-influenced stereotypes about people from India, so much so that comedian Hari Kondabolu made a full documentary about The Problem With Apu. Now, character voice Hank Azaria admits the controversy is “a lot to think about,” as well that producers have considered potential measures in response.

Azaria had notably avoided commenting on or contributing to the documentary, which sees Kondabolu exploring the character’s origins and impact on the Indian community. TMZ managed to find Azaria out in the open, however, for which the voice actor noted that “the documentary made some really interesting points and gave us a lot to think about, and we really are.” Rather than get into specifics, however, Azaria seemed to apologize for any offense:

Definitely anybody that was hurt or offended by any character or vocal performance is really upsetting, if that was offensive or hurtful to anybody. And I think it’s an important conversation, one definitely worth having.

Asked if producers were considering any “measures taken” with regard to the character, Azaria would only note that “we’re just really thinking about it, it’s a lot to digest.” TMZ took the actor’s words as potential suggestion that Apu might “vanish from Springfield.”

In the meantime, you can watch a trailer for Kondabolu’s documentary below, and stay tuned for any potential update on the character.
