Did ‘South Park’ Go Too Far Depicting Gun-Wielding Kurt Cobain?

‘South Park’ is known for its irreverent humor, and with its season finale, the creators decided to take a shot at the importance of today’s generation and their fascination with what’s trending online. With the course of the episode, the kids decide to put on a Christmas special (at the urging of a hologram Bill Cosby), while Cartman provides live commentary on his YouTube web show.

It was teased in advance that Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain would be part of the episode, and sure enough he turns up as a gun-toting hologram singing ‘Up on the Roof Top’ in front of a raging fire (watch at the 12:25 mark above). Meanwhile, tweets scroll across the screen, one with a hashtag that says “#courtneydidIt and another that states, “Smashing Pumpkins were better.” As the song continues, you see Cobain loading the shotgun, then pulling the trigger with a flag saying ‘Merry Christmas’ popping out. Cartman then comments that he’s sure this is how Cobain would want to be remembered.

Always one to push buttons, we see references to Bill Cosby offering Taylor Swift a drink, the hologram Michael Jackson appearing as Peter Pan and more. There’s other shots taken at pop culture favorites like Iggy Azalea, Lorde and the late Tupac Shakur. You can watch the full episode above.

So what’s your thought on the Cobain reference? Is it the typical clever, non-politically correct type of humor you’ve come to love and respect from the ‘South Park’ creators, or, given the nature of Cobain’s death by shotgun suicide, do you feel it took things too far? Watch the Kurt Cobain scene at the 12:25 mark in the episode above, then leave your comments in the section provided below.
