Americans are getting ready to spend $5.9 billion celebrating St. Patrick’s Day this year. According to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics annual survey, Americans continue to spend more money on the Irish holiday, last year a record amount $5.3 billion was shelled out.
The breakdown of the numbers shows the average consumer will spend $39.65 per person. St. Patricks Day is celebrated the most by the age bracket of 18 to 24 year olds. The most money will be spent by indidviuals who are 35 to 44 with the average expected to be $45.76.
One of the reasons given in the survey why the holiday s is becoming more popular is because it's less about giving gifts and more about having a good time with friends and  family.

According to the National Retail Federation survey the most money 50% will be used to purchase food, 41% on beverages, 31% for apparel or accessories, 26% decorations and 16% on candy. The survey also shows that grocery stores will the #1 point of purchase followed by discount stores, department stores and wrapping up the list bars or restaurants.
