The Top 20 Conversation Hearts That Have Been Retired
My how times have changed! This is the 147th Valentine's Day people will celebrate with those candy conversation hearts. Sure, they taste like you're eating chalk or drywall, but the messages on them are the best, which is why people buy four million pounds of them a year during the six week period leading up to Valentine's Day.
'The Atlantic' talked to NECCO, the company behind them, and got a list of some of the messages on the hearts they've retired over the years. After all, slang evolves and you don't want your hearts sounding un-hip, right?
Here are the top 20 retired conversation hearts:
- DIG ME
- HOT CHA
- SAUCY BOY
- GIRL POWER
- OH YOU KID
- WHY NOT
- GROOVY
- COOL DUDE
- MY, SUCH EYES
- FAX ME
- HEP CAT
- TELL ME HOW
- YOU ARE LATE
- 1-800 CUPID
- The Peace Symbol
- YEAH RIGHT
- OH BOY
- YOU ROCK
- LET'S READ
- YOU ARE GAY
Obviously, number 20 was pulled because "gay" has a much different meaning today than it did 147 years ago. It actually meant "You are happy and lighthearted"
This year, a few new hearts have been added, including "TEXT ME," "UR HOT," and "LOML" which means "Love Of My Life."
An interesting fact about the sweet sweets, NECCO considered printing the phrase "PUCKER UP," but immediately reconsidered. The machine that prints the letters often printed "Ps" that looked more like "Fs," so they kissed that thought goodbye!
