Get out the bread, cheese and frying pan. Even Joe Biden was spotted in San Francisco doing his patriotic duty this weekend ordering a “Vice Presidential Special”: a classic grilled cheese with tomato, tomato basil soup and a chocolate shake. The modern version of the sandwich originated in the 1920s when inexpensive sliced bread and American cheese became readily available.
