Paul Bunyan is a very popular character here in Michigan with at least a half a dozen statues paying tribute to Paul and Babe, The Blue Ox. The one I'm familiar with is in Oscoda. According to roadarch.com, this Paul Bunyan statue is about 13 feet tall not including the base. The statue was originally paper-mâché, built as part of a J. L. Hudson Department Store float for the Thanksgiving Day parade in Detroit. In 1971 it was purchased for $50 and brought to Oscoda and was restored and covered with fiberglass by Sawyer Canoe in 1983. It’s located in front of Furtaw Field also known as Paul Bunyan Park. Oscoda hosts Paul Bunyan Days, a festival with a lumberjack show, a chainsaw carving competition and other events coming up in September.
