Too cold for school? That's a "thing" now? Yes, parents are divided when school is called off due to Wind Chill. I've overheard people saying "back in their day" this never happened and the other side of parents being thankful for school being called off. Here's what I found out determines the factors of school being called off.

When there is a ton of snow on the ground it is easier for a superintendent to call off school. When it comes to Wind Chill, it gets a little more complicated.  Arctic temperatures in our region is causing some administrators to worry that just traveling to school during these days is risky for youngsters. Most school districts are educating themselves about the affects of wind chill and the minimum exposure time before frostbite occurs, using resources such as the the National Weather Service Office Wind Chill Index (as seen below). Basically, if you cannot be outside for 30 minutes without suffering frost bite, it's time to call off school.

Happy Wind Chill day to you Lapeer! Stay inside, warm, have a hot coco, and think of spring.
