When you head out tonight to catch the yearly Leonid meteor shower, don’t despair if there’s a cloud cover. According to Discovery, a standard FM radio tuner can be used to listen for high-speed meteors hitting the Earth’s atmosphere. They explain that meteors create a trail of ionized gas and it’s possible for radio signals to bounce off these trails and be picked up over the airwaves. Tune-in to a commercial FM radio station far enough away so that all you hear is static and listen for pops, whistles and the station coming in for brief moments at a time as the Leonids zing by.
