ZZ Top Perform As Quintet for First Time

ZZ Top
Tower Top Tours

Earlier this month, ZZ Top performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival and wanted to do something for the festival’s founder, Claude Nobs. Nobs — a good friend of Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill – died in January at the age of 76.

For the performance, the trio jazzed things up and performed as a quintet for the first time in their history. Austin-based Hammond B3 organ player Mike Flanigin (who’s played with Eric Clapton and Norah Jones, among others) flew in for the show. So did Van Wilks, another Austin-based musician known for his electric and acoustic guitar work.

The concert took place at the Stravinski Auditorium in Montreux, Switzerland, on July 10, 2013. “Montreux is special to us … because of Claude [and] because of every kind of music that is here,” Hill said during an interview taped that week.

The set included many of the band’s hits as well as a cover of Jimi Hendrix‘s ‘Foxy Lady.’
