Wearing a garland of marigolds, bandmate Bob Weir waded out into the waters of India's sacred Ganges River twenty years ago and released some of the ashes of Jerry Garcia. He and Garcia's widow, Deborah Koons, traveled to India with the ashes, drawing objections from some of his family members. Garcia died of a heart attack at age 53 in a Marin County drug rehabilitation center on August 9, 1995. A London newspaper reported that during the ceremony a woman who had been one of Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters danced on the riverbank and Weir prayed "May you have peace, Jerry, and travel to the stars."
