Nearly 40 years after the Grateful Dead used it to get out of their contract with Warner Bros. — and flout the traditions of the “greatest hits” record while they were at it — the live album ‘History of the Grateful Dead Vol. 1 (Bear’s Choice)’ is getting the vinyl reissue treatment.

Audio Fidelity has announced a July 10 release date for the reissue, which will be pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl and issued in a numbered limited edition. The group’s fourth live album captures the Dead during their February 13-14, 1970 stand at New York’s Fillmore East, with tracks curated by sound manager Owsley ‘Bear’ Stanley.

‘History’ also marks a turning point for the Dead’s original lineup, presented for the final time before the death of founding member Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKiernan, who passed away just before the album’s release. Artistically, Audio Fidelity’s press release argues that ‘History’ is “the first to fully document the Dead that most later music fans came to know: still capable of dazzling instrumental improvisation, but also dipping deeply into the well of more intimate, traditional folk and blues material.”
