A Detroit police officer was shot in the head after responding to a call in the 10,000 block of Joy Road on Detroit's west side.

Police Chief James Craig says the officer is listed in "very critical condition" and is out of surgery. During a press conference Monday morning the chief stated the officer's condition had deteriorated and that he will have to undergo more surgery.

The shooting occurred after police were called to an apartment on Detroit's west side for a domestic violence incident. Craig states that the gunman who shot the officer did not appear to be involved with the domestic violence situation, and came out of his apartment and shot the officer.

The man who shot the officer was killed by police. The officer shot is a 14-year veteran of the force. According to Craig since September 2016 either officers have been shot or murdered in the line of duty in Detroit.
