The Lapeer County School Board of Education approved 38 layoffs for district teachers and para-professionals. The two Lapeer High Schools, East and West combining, and a dropping enrollment caused the LCS to act. The layoff list is comprised of 22 teachers and at least 16 par-professionals. 

The district is expected to begin the school year with just over 5,500 students. Also adding to the layoffs was the fact that number of retirees was less than expected. The layoffs were based on teacher performance evaluations, and seniority. State policy required that the para-professionals were judged only on seniority.

There are 322 teachers and more than a hundred para-professionals employed by the district. A three-year downsizing campaign has reduced that number from near 370 just a few years ago,
