Ford, GM Workers Collect Toys for More Than 7,000 Michigan Kids

The program was started in 1971 and GM joined in four years ago.

Operation Good Cheer is run by Child and Family Services of Michigan. Ford and GM employees buy, wrap and transport 21,000 presents to local kids who are in the foster care system.

Kids range in age from infants to 18 and include developmentally delayed adults. Gifts are flown to foster centers throughout the state by Fiat Chrysler Automotive pilots.

GM's volunteer operations officer says, "We’re looking beyond who’s selling the most cars and SUVs and looking to help these kids in foster care.”

Employees are given profiles of each child and are asked to buy three gifts that are on their list. They're then wrapped and loaded onto planes and flown to foster centers throughout the state.
