According to reports, the medical center that's located just off I-75 will continue to provide emergency room triage and treatment to those younger patients as well as still provide outpatient surgical procedures. The change will mean that if those patients require admittance to the hospital for additional care they will be transferred to another facility.

Ascension notes that the changes will not affect those looking to deliver at the hospital and it will be business as usual in the Birthing Center and with all OB/GYN services currently provided.

So why the change? According to ABC-12, Ascension said the continued decline of pediatric patient volumes and the availability of other nearby hospitals that can treat those patients factored into the decision. They also noted that those employees affected by the change in service will be offered other jobs in the hospital.

Genesee County has 3 main hospitals in the area to serve patients with McLaren and Hurley Medical Center joining Ascension in providing care. Hurley Children's Hospital has already served as the go-to for the intense needs of kids in the area having the region’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
