House Passes Bill That Allows Michiganders To Leave Running Vehicles Unattended

Legislation has now advanced to the Senate in Michigan that will allow residents to leave vehicles running on private property.

The bill (which passed 77-30 by the House on Tuesday) was put in order after a Michigan man was ticketed over $120 for leaving his car unattended during the winter. The man explained to the police officer who issued the ticket that he left the vehicle running to warm up, but the officer gave him a ticket anyway and explained it is illegal in the state of Michigan to leave your vehicle unattended while running.

The current law requires people to stop the engine completely and remove the key before leaving the vehicle. If passed the new law will allow people to leave their cars running and unattended but only on private property.

The legislation will now go to the Senate.
