When I first heard of the "Scrambled Hamburg" I thought of scrambled eggs on a burger, but that is not the case, but it is a thing in one Michigan city.

Unlike stew which has been around since 3750 BC, the hamburger has only been around for about 140 years.

A man by the name of Fletcher Davis created an early version of the hamburger that he sold in his small cafe that was located in Athens, Texas, back in the 1880s.

It wasn't until 1904, when Davis debuted his invention at the St. Louis World's Fair, that the hamburger got a bigger audience.

Not long after Davis unleashed the hamburger at the St. Louis World's Fair, it began to take off at restaurants all over the country. McDonald's was the first to take the market when they began serving burgers in 1940. Other chains like Burger King, Wendy's, and many others have followed but none of them were known for the "Scrambled Hamburg."

The scrambled hamburger was invented by John R. Doyle whom owned a restaurant called Doyle Hamburgs in Saginaw, Michigan, in the 1950s.

Doyle called his burger the Scrambled Hamburg as it is similar to a regular burger where ketchup, mustard, pickles, and onions are part of the toppings but the onions are in the loose meat that goes on the burger instead of the patty that is normally associated with a burger.

The "Scrambled Hamburg" was legendary around Saginaw for many years. So much so, the Castle Museum put together a recipe to recreate the infamous burger which I included below if you would like to make one of your own. I am going to give this burger a try.

According to the Castle Museum, this is how the "Scrambled Hamburg" is made:

Ingredients:

1 1/2 lbs Jack's Ground Round, 3 tablespoons Colvita Extra Virgin Olive Oil 10 Shakes Worcestershire or to taste. 1/4 stick of real butter. Seasoned salt and pepper to taste

Brown to medium to medium well. Drain serve on a large higher quality hamburger bun.
