At the 2025 U.S. Open Beer Championship, one of the most competitive brewing contests in the country, five Michigan breweries earned medals for their outstanding creations.

Held recently in Oxford, Ohio, the competition drew more than 8,000 beer entries from across the country, covering over 170 styles and categories. From bold IPAs to crisp lagers and inventive seasonal brews, this competition showcases the best of the best — and Michigan made sure its name was on that list!

For craft beer drinkers, it’s just another reason to love the Great Beer State. With more than 400 breweries and a deep-rooted brewing culture, Michigan has become a go-to destination for anyone who enjoys a good pint.

One West Michigan brewery stole the show at the U.S. Beer Open Beer Championship.

Silver Harbor Dominates U.S. Beer Open With Four Medals

Silver Harbor Brewing in St. Joseph brought home an impressive four medals, including a gold for its bold, bourbon barrel-aged Maple Grenade in the Barrel-Aged Strong Stout/Porter category. The brewery also took home silvers for Shipfaced in the English Barleywine category, Two Brewers are Better Than One in the Belgian Quadrupel category, and Happy Accidents, a peachy brew that medaled in the Fruit Wheat Beer category.

Bell’s Brewery Brings Home the Gold

Bell’s Brewery in Comstock also made a strong showing, winning three medals. The fan-favorite brewery earned gold for Bell’s Smitten in the Single Hop Pale Ale category and for Oberon Light, a citrusy spin on their classic summer beer, in the American-Style Fruit Beer category. Bell’s also grabbed a silver for its Kalamazoo Stout in the American Stout category.

Other Michigan Breweries That Scored Medals

The remaining medals went to a few more Michigan standouts. Schoolcraft Brewery in Livonia won bronze for its Old Crank in the Strong Scottish Ale category.

Big Lake Brewing in Holland earned a bronze for its Michigan Amber in the American Amber/Red Ale category. And Three Blondes Brewing in South Haven took bronze in the Herb & Spice Beer category for their creatively named Dill With It.
