Michigan’s Faygo Red Pop! What Really is the Flavor?

Are you a fan of Michigan's own Faygo Red Pop? Lots of people are. It was one of the original flavors and holds the number one spot on their list.

So, what do you think you are drinking, anyway? Cherry pop? Strawberry pop? Raspberry pop? Hmmm.....?

Our sister station, WFMK in East Lansing asked the same question. Is there an answer here?

Faygo has such a rich history in Michigan that began in Detroit in 1907, and is still bottled there today.

FEIGENSON BROTHERS

Wikipedia says Ben and Perry Feigenson were Russian immigrants to Detroit, and trained as bakers. While packaging their soda water, they began playing around with the idea of creating soft drinks based on their frosting flavors.

So, they created a carbonated soda “pop” – nicknamed because of the sound it made when the top popped off, so the story goes. Maybe that is why we Midwesterners call soda pop, "pop" and much of the rest of the country calls it "soda." But I digress.

The initial flavors were fruit punch, strawberry and grape, which they sold fresh from a horse-drawn wagon the day after it was made.

The company was called Feigenson Brothers Company but that name was way too long to fit on a soda pop bottle. So they created the name “Faygo.”

SO, WHAT IS THE FLAVOR OF RED POP?  

When a Faygo executive was asked that question, he said Faygo had to describe it somehow, so they claim it's "strawberry," even though it isn't.

The actual flavor is locked in a safe and is.....a secret!
