DTW Just Rolled Out Self Driving Wheelchairs and It’s Wild
If you’ve ever walked through Detroit Metro Airport, you already know…it’s basically a workout before your flight even starts, especially if you have trouble getting around.
Now imagine skipping all that walking and hopping into a chair that just takes you to your gate on its own.
Yeah, that’s actually happening.

DTW is now rolling out self-driving wheelchairs that can navigate the terminal on their own. You sit down, get set up, and the thing just goes. It follows a mapped route, avoids people, and gets you straight to your gate.
No awkward small talk. No feeling rushed. No dragging your carry-on halfway across the airport.
How Do Autonomous Wheelchairs Work at DTW?
They’re designed for travelers who don’t necessarily need full assistance but struggle walking long distances. Once you’re in, the chair uses sensors and pre-programmed routes to move through the terminal safely.
And when you’re done? It sends itself back to pick up the next person. That part is still kind of crazy.
The only thing I’m wondering…how long before people start taking advantage of this? You know what I mean…those people who could walk, but just choose not to. This is giving major Wall-E vibes…just people rolling around instead of using their legs.
Where Are These Autonomous Wheelchairs Being Used?
Detroit Metro has officially launched these at the Evans Terminal, so this isn’t just a test anymore…it’s live.
Airport officials say this is all about making travel more accessible and easier for passengers.
If this goes well, don’t be surprised if you start seeing these at airports all over the country.
