Flint Central High School Demolition Marks A New Beginning
Demolition is set to begin this April at Flint Central High School, marking the end of an era for the longtime Genesee County landmark.
A new school is planned for the site, backed in part by nearly $6 million in grant funding from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation.
According to ABC 12, there is hope that the bell tower in front of the high school can be preserved, but nothing has been guaranteed at this time.
Located at 601 Crapo Street, Flint Central High School opened its doors in 1923 and closed in 2009.
Why did Flint Central High School close?
The Flint Board of Education voted to close the school due to rising maintenance costs and declining enrollment. Flint Central High School was not the only school voted to close. The following elementary schools closed as well,
- Civic Park,
- Garfield
- Merrill
- Stewart
- Anderson
