Well, it's that time of year again when the orange barrels, road closures, and detour signs come out. Oh yeah, and angry Michigan drivers.

It's funny how we complain when the roads are bad, and we complain when they're being fixed. Most Michiganders are used to it, but that doesn't make it any less of a headache, especially when it messes with your commute.

There's one project that's expected to get underway soon that's going to frustrate drivers and make their commutes even more of a pain. Preventive maintenance work on the Zilwaukee Bridge in Saginaw County is to blame.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, starting in April, southbound I-75 and the Zilwaukee Bridge will be shut down for over two months for maintenance. Yup, more roadwork fun for Michigan drivers.

There is some good news. At least it's only southbound I-75, and it's only for a couple of months. However, this is just stage one of a two-stage project.

When Does Construction Start on Southbound I-75/Zilwaukee Bridge?

Stage one construction will start on Monday, April 14, and will end Friday, June 27

SB I-75 and Zilwaukee Bridge Closure - What You Need to Know

Southbound I-75 will be closed and detoured onto southbound I-675 from north of Kochville Road to south of Wadsworth Road.

The ramps at Adams Street are also shutting down, so if you need to get there, you'll have to take I-675 to Tittabawassee Road (Exit 6) and loop back.

The northbound I-675 ramp to southbound I-75 will be closed, too. Drivers will have to take northbound I-75 to M-84 (Exit 160), then loop back onto southbound I-75 and I-675.

Stage two work on the northbound lanes is planned to begin July 14. The overall project isn't expected to wrap up until November 2025.
