Here’s What MDOT Just Announced for I-475 in Flint and Burton
Okay, we have more details about MDOT’s plan for I-475, and it’s going to be a long one. You might want to brace yourself now, because this project is going to stretch from spring 2026 through 2028.
The rebuild covers both sides of I-475 from Bristol Road in Burton up to the Flint River in Flint. We already knew that part. What we didn’t know until now is what MDOT actually plans to do with it. This isn’t just a repave job. They’re removing overpasses that barely get any traffic and trying to open things up for pedestrians instead of just drivers.

For starters, the 14th Street overpass is going away. Hardly anyone uses it, so instead of fixing it, MDOT is just taking it down. The Grand Traverse overpass is staying, but it’ll be shortened to cut down on future costs.
Then there’s the Second Street bridge, which is getting a totally new life. Instead of cars, it’ll be just for walking, biking, and actually spending time on it. They’re planning lighting, turf, benches, and plants to make it feel like an actual space instead of just a bridge over traffic.

MDOT hasn’t said what traffic restrictions will look like yet, so we don’t know how bad things will get. They’ll release those details closer to the start date. For now, just know it’s coming, it’s happening, and it’s going to take a while.
