MI Man Takes Beautiful Photos of Northern Lights Over Lake Superior
You may have noticed Michiganders from all over the state sharing photos this week on social media of the Northern Lights which were visible Sunday into Monday. While many of the photos were super cool, they didn't compare to the shots taken by photographer Shannon Kivi.
Kivi captured some amazing images near Marquette over the shores of Lake Superior.

Northern Lights last night!! 2-27-23Captured these near Marquette over the shores of Lake Superior!! I missed the deep red color by 15 minutes but it was still pretty amazing! My last picture was overlooking Presque Isle Park and the ore dock in Marquette.
What Causes the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis)?
According to WDIV, the phenomenon occurs during geomagnetic storms in which portions of the sun erupt at varying levels. These lights are a direct result of the geomagnetic effect on "disturbances of high-frequency radio bands."
Did you get all that? Yeah, it's a little hard to comprehend. We just think it looks really cool.

The photo below Kivi says was taken overlooking Presque Isle Park and the ore dock in Marquette.
Last year around this time, Kivi shared some killer footage that he captured with his drone as it flew over Lake Superior in Marquette. The footage from his drone shows ice shards piling up near the shores of Lake Superior. You can see the video, here.
