Major Michigan Grocery Store Makes Massive Cuts After Costly Mistake
Kroger jumped hard into automation over the last few years, spending big money on giant robot-run warehouses to handle online orders. Now they’re starting to second-guess the idea because the whole thing is not working the way they hoped.
Why Kroger Is Scaling Back Automation
According to The Street, Kroger is shutting down three of its big robot warehouses in Florida, Maryland, and Wisconsin. Instead of relying on those hubs, they are moving orders back to regular stores and using Instacart, DoorDash, and Uber Eats to get groceries out fast. Kroger says the change will save them about four hundred million dollars in 2026.

Okay, so here is where Michigan comes in. Kroger has a massive presence here, especially around Flint, Detroit, Lansing, and pretty much everywhere in between. When a chain this big changes direction, it usually starts with states that have a lot of older, high-traffic stores because those locations cost the most to run. And with Kroger already planning to close sixty stores nationwide, Michigan shoppers should expect things to shift a little.
Kroger also admitted that its fancy automated network just isn’t hitting the financial marks they wanted. Basically, the robots aren’t saving them money, so the company is backing off and focusing more on traditional in-store fulfillment in places where demand is strong.

I think we are going to see a lot more of this from big companies because it feels like everyone is experimenting with robots and automation right now.
Long story short: if you shop at Kroger in Michigan, don’t be shocked if your store starts relying more on delivery apps or makes shifts to cut costs. The robot grocery takeover isn’t happening anytime soon.
